The death of Akkineni Nagaeswara Rao popularly known as ANR was great loss to Telugu cine industry in particular and to Indian film industry in general.
A great personality with illustrious career, having played the role of a hero in more than films, he has contributed for the growth of Telugu cine industry at Hyderabad. A brief biographical sketch of this great legend is made in this article.
Introduction
A farmer by birth, Akkinaeni Nageswara Rao, made an entry into the field of fine arts through theatre.He played the role of a female artiste in stage dramas because women at that time were prohibited from acting.
Born at Ramapuram in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh on 20th September in a farmer's family, he developed a fascination towards theatre arts since childhood. He was introduced to cinema field by accident through cine producer Ghantashala Blaramaiah and never looked back.
He acted in more than telugu movies, 26 Tamil movies and one Hindi movie. In movies, he played the lead role and many of them are of Ramance, Socio-fantcy and sociological movies. He played some mythological characters along with his friend and contemporary NTR.

ANR and N T Rama Rao were the earliest stars of the black and white era.ANR made his film debut in early s with 'Dharmapatni', in which he acted as a woman.
He gave great all time hits like 'Batasari', 'Devadas' and 'Prem Nagar', 'Tenali Ramakrishna', 'Maya Bazaar', 'Missamma' and 'Sitaramayya gari Manavaralu'. His poignant portrayal of 'Devdas' in the film based on the novel of acclaimed Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chatterjee brought him laurels and it still stands as a classic movie in the present generation also.

Awards Received
He won 4 Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Awards for 'Sudigundalu' in , for 'Marapuraani Manishi'in , 'Seetharamaih gari Manavaraalu' in and 'Bangaru Kutumbam' in in his acting career.The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Vibhushan in India's second highest civilian award, for his contribution to the movie world and earlier he received Padma Sri in seventies, and also a recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the highest individual lifetime achievement award for films in India.
He got a rare honour of receiving 'Kalimani' award from government of Tamil nadu and "Kalidas Kaustab' from the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
He also received the NTR National award in named after NTR, the first to receive the award.
Contribution to Movie Industry
He played a sheet anchor role in shifting the Telugu film industry from Chennai to Hyderabad and established Annapurna Studios, named after his wife, which helped the cause of employment for the people who depended on Cine industry.He was instrumental in persuading many producers to shift base to Hyderabad for making films with him.

He visited various countries as a guest of honour by the USA, Russia, UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Malaysia, and Japan. Thus he became a cultural ambassador representing India. He visited Australia in , leading a delegation representing the Indian film, 'Anthasthulu'. A very recent, contemplative, self-reflective work is the book Manasuloni Maata which got good response from readers. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from several Indian universities and Andhra University, Visakhapatnam was the first to decorate him with a Doctorate titling 'Kala Prapoorna'.

He had a strong will power and positive attitude and he himself declared his illness to the public last year and appealed to the fans to take it in their stride.With the end of this great legend on 22nd January , Telugu people lost their beloved actor and felt in grief of sorrow as if they lost their own man.
