Rockapalooza Saturday's rock show draws huge crowd and long lines

JACKSON, MI – Rockapalooza organizer Tim Corser and his staff continue to push the limits of the outdoor music festival, and people continue to respond in record numbers.

The sixth Rockapalooza all-day concert was held at Jackson County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June

It is not yet known if attendance surpassed the record mark of 12, that attended last year's Rockapalooza, but the consensus seemed to be that the crowd was larger.

“This keeps getting bigger every year, and you guys continue to show up,” Corser told the crowd around p.m., just prior to the performance of scheduled headliners Adam Gontier, Saliva and Candlebox.

The concert was scheduled to feature more than bands on eight stages, with the vast majority of the bands playing no longer than 30 minutes.

Darling Down lead singer Amanda Legault performed at the first Rockapalooza, which was a two-stage street festival in It was Legault’s first time back at Rockapalooza, which moved to the fairgrounds in

“I can’t believe how much it’s grown,” said Legault, a Battle Creek resident.

“It has to take a lot of organization to pull this off.

“The bands have been great.”

Keirston and Mike Jefferson of Jackson have been regular attendees at Rockapalooza.

“I think this is the best thing Jackson has going in terms of bands,” Keirston said.

“It’s better than the fair.”

While most seemed to enjoy the music, one thing nearly everyone seemed to be unhappy with were the lines to get food and beverages and to use the portable toilets.

There was just one tent selling food at the festival. Even during the early-afternoon hours, when many concertgoers had yet to arrive, the line to purchase food was more than people long.

That line stretched to several hundred during the evening hours, creating waits of 30 to 45 minutes.

There were several stands selling alcoholic beverages, bottled water, soda and energy drinks, making waits for those items a little shorter. Once a beverage was purchased, there were several spots to refill the container with water for free.

Organizers have increased the number of portable toilets on the grounds the past couple of years, and lines were quite short during the afternoon but did begin to get longer during the festival’s peak hours.

“The bands have been great, but the lines do suck,” said Kristy Gould of Elsie, a repeat Rockapalooza attendee.

He is regarded for his singing capabilities and is known to have a voice range from high tenor to medium low bass.

“It would be nice if there was more than one place to buy food.”

Corser acknowledged the waits that kept attendees away from watching the bands.

“I promise next year we’re going to be able to keep up with you guys,” he said.

Another issue was the apparent lack of information available detailing which stage bands were performing and what time they were performing.

Programs featuring the lineup and schedule for each stage were available for $5 in one of the booths at the south end of the fairgrounds.

The programs were a new addition this year and many of the volunteers working the event apparently were not made aware of the change.

The first Countrypalooza is scheduled for noon Sunday, June 23 at the fairgrounds. Admission will be $20 at the door.
