Simbongile Ndlangisa

Features Writer

Johannesburg

She&#;s young, brilliant and a #Maverick in her own right.

I introduce to you, Ketrice Maitisa, the fresh new face eager to take over South African theatre. With our Mzansi media rarely putting a focus on the young guns on the come up, let alone theatre; I thought it fitting to school y&#;all on a lady that is determined to get theatre right up there with film and television. Why we love her? Who wouldn&#;t love a girl who jumps straight off her early morning flight onto a 30 minute train ride and becomes the muse in your shoot for more than three hours without a single complaint?!

    This 20 year old ACT Cape Town student is all about acting. Off camera and stage, she is a grand-daughter, daughter, big sister and a friend. While I lunch with her, she can&#;t stop telling stories about her amusing and loving family dynamic. Even though I&#;ve known for a few years, introducing her to The Urban Mavericks Team was easy, they instantly hit it off.

    That says something about Kerdi, as she is called, she never fails to have a smile on her face and joy in her heart. We love that.

    Kertrice tells us about how, when she was younger and started going to castings, she thought it was something fun similar to an extra-mural that she did on her after school.

    &#;I didn&#;t realise I was getting paid to have fun,&#; she says.

    Choosing Education

    Sadly, it is becoming a trend for aspiring entertainers to choose to pursue their dreams rather than taking a few years to educate and train themselves in whatever it is that they want to do.

    On the other, this is also a reflection of the lack of  outstanding tertiary institutions in the country that lend themselves to practical studies in the arts and entertainment. For Kertrice, there was no question about it; giving herself further training in what she calls her craft was an important decision. She is a part time student at ACT in Cape Town and in the way she talks about her classes and her teachers and mentors, you can hear the passion as it illuminates her voice.

    Juggling Act

    With only two decades on Earth, Kertrice has no trouble handling he busy schedule which includes college, acting, travelling and doing the only thing that most 20 year olds want to, PARTY and socialise.

    Her self-management skills and dedication are to be applauded for her &#;Never-Miss-Class&#; attitude. Juggling all she has to is vital to Kertrice as she says that her tertiary education works hand-in-hand with her acting career; the two co-exist and &#;for me, I couldn&#;t do one without the other.&#; The travelling she manages because she has to.

    Her family is staying in Pretoria and she is living in Cape Town. She travels often to see them. When her recent role as Lindiwe in Rainbow Scars required her to be in Johannesburg while it showed at the Market Theatre, she moved to Pretoria temporarily and commuted to Johannesburg via the train daily to attend classes at the Jozi AFDA Campus.

    &#;The passion and the hunger that the people I go to school with have; that is what drives me. I am constantly surrounded by young people who want to succeed and in their path to success have no time for ego antics or petty competition. Everyone genuinely supports one another.&#;

    Kertrice was nominated for Best Newcomer/Breakthrough in the Naledi Theatre Awards for her role as Lindiwe in Rainbow Scars

     Rainbow Scars

    Written by Mike van Graan and directed by Lara Bye, Rainbow Scars is a tale set in of a born-free orphan, Lindiwe (Kertrice), who is adopted by a white woman (Jennifer Steyn).

    18 years later, the mother and daughter relationship is rocked by an emergence of someone unexpected in Lindiwe&#;s life. As Lindiwe&#;s story moves along, the play highlights the scars of a country struggling to heal from its past of division. The production began showing at The Artscape in Cape Town, moved on to win a Standard Bank Ovation Award after its performance at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

    Starring alongside Kertrice are well-known actors, Mbulelo whom Kerdi describes as a brother figure for her and Jennifer Steyn.

    Kertrice describes the decision she had to make when the show went on to show at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg as tough and changed the way she envisioned her life plan to happen. The move of the show to Jozi meant that she would have to make the move too.

    During this time she called on the advice of fellow actor, comedian and someone that she calls the big brother she never had; Siv Ngesi. After reflecting, she realised that few opportunities like this exist for actors as young as she is and she grabbed it both hands. This lead to her changing her course at ACT from a full time to a part time one and temporarily leaving the Cape that she loves so much.

    These are the kind of decisions that change your life forever, I&#;m sure Kertrice did not imagine that a year down the line, a board of theatre legends in South Africa would consider and recognise her acting talent as one that was deserving of an award.

    Naledi Theatre Awards

    There are few greater feelings in the world than that of being acknowledged and given a nod for constantly working hard at what you are talented at and in excelling in that by people you regard as role models and pioneers.

    I imagine I would feel this way if someone like Khanyi Dhlomo would tell me that I am great work and should continue. Few things could motivate me to do greater things than that.

    Kertrice has now has first hand experience in this. After being pleasantly shocked by her nomination, she went on to research all things that she did not know about the awards which really made her more nervous than anything, she explains.

    Other nominees for the theatre trophies included Athandwa Kani and Masasa Mbangeni (google them, it&#;s worth your time). The annual ceremony took place for the 11th time on March 17th at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City, JHB.

    Being the graceful girl that she is, after not taking the award on night, Kertrice sent me the following text on Whatsapp 20 minutes after her arrival in CPT: &#;So, I didn&#;t take it.

    Khayalethu Anthony (Solomon and Marion) did, but it was so much fun (she attended with family). I didn&#;t get sad or disappointed nor feel a need to cry  because MAN, there were great actors who&#;d been nominated year after year and finally got their shine last night.

    To have been nominated in the category that I was in is huge; even the nomination that Rainbow Scars received for Best Production in a play was a big deal. I am proud, inspired, excited, blessed, privileged and happy. I want to do what I have been envisioning for SA Performing Arts now more than I ever did before.&#;
